Go Green with Your Classroom Party or School Event!
TUTORIALS!
Check out our online presentation for "Making your Classroom Party a Zero-Waste Event" or download a printable guide here.
If you are planning a grade-wide or schoolwide event and need to use any of the four event receptacles we have for recycling/compost, email Robin to reserve up to all four.
Watch the 2-minute tutorial on the left to see how to assemble them and what bags you will need for collecting compostable waste. |
Our idle-free school zone helps our kids breathe easier.
Please turn off your engine if you are waiting to pick-up children from school. Vehicle idling wastes fuel, pollutes the air and is a serious health concern for children.
Harmful gases and small particles emitted from idling vehicles accumulate and can irritate the respiratory system for people inside and around idling vehicles. Children are most at risk because they breathe faster than adults, taking in more air per pound of body weight, especially those with pre-existing respiratory illnesses such as asthma. In Central Texas, 13% of children have asthma.
Our idle-free school zone improves the air in the immediate surroundings, and it also reduces the formation of ground-level ozone—the biggest air quality problem in Central Texas. Roughly half of the pollution sources that lead to ground level ozone come from vehicles.

Better yet, get MOVING to school without the car!
Since celebrating Walk-to-School month each October since 2008 and launching our Boltage program in 2010, more Bryker Woods students are improving air quality and their health by ditching the car ride to school. Our Boltage online tracking system linked to our Boltage meter (located in front of the school). Pick up a Boltage ID tag for your students' backpacks so that they can get ZAPPED at our Boltage meter. Once you register the tag on the Boltage website, you can know the instant your student arrives at school through the website. Email Cord Dover with questions.

SWAP-O-RAMA!
February 2012
Since 2009, Bryker Woods has hosted this free event with other central Austin schools to show kids how fun it can be to swap clothing, re-style or re-purpose it! With a team of volunteer seamstress and designers, kids can turn long sleeves into fingerless gloves, an beloved outgrown shirt into a tote, or a plain t-shirt into a shirt with a cool silk screen. The possibilities are endless!

Reducing Energy Use at Home for 3rd-6th Grade Team!
Team Bryker Woods accepts America’s Home Energy Challenge! Eight 3rd-6th graders set out to learn about energy use in the home, design an energy conservation plan for your home and implement it for the months of October through December 2011!
Bryker Woods is the only Austin school participating in this national challenge to 3rd-8th grade students to lead their families toward energy and $ savings. Though we’re in this for our kids, high-scoring schools compete for more than $200,000 in this first-ever national challenge! Check out our Team's website. Questions? Email Amy.
