Playground Monitors
Hello Playground Monitors,
I don't know about you, but for me, once November hits, it seems the year is basically over. So I wanted to get this message out to you before the busy holiday to dos start taking over our lives.
As of now, I have only populated the Playground Monitor Calendar through the end of December. It was a new tool that I was unfamiliar with so I decided to do both the Coordinater's part and the Volunteers' part at first. It was rather cumbersome for me to do it that way because that is not how Volunteer Spot is designed to work. Here is the skinny:
--The Coordinator (that would be me) sets up the Calendar for dates and times that volunteers are needed.
--The Volunteers (that would be all of you) log into the website and simply click on the shifts for which they are volunteering.
It is that simple! So this is what I need you to do. I have now set up the calendar in VolunteerSpot with all the Playground Monitor Shift needed from January 2010 through the end of the school year. Please go to the Bryker Woods PTA website and click on the tab to the left called “Volunteer Information”. Two other tabs will appear. Choose the one called “Playground”. At that top of the page that appears is a button/link called “Click here to sign up on Volunteer Spot”. Click there and follow the simple instructions to register. I know some of you have already registered.
Once you are registered, you are ready to sign up for your playground shift. When signing up, please continue your shift from where you left off in December. For example if you volunteer on an EVERY OTHER WEEK basis and you are on the last school week in December (Dec 14 – 17), then you will not be back on the schedule until the week of January 11th. Then continue choosing your shifts every other week. If you come to a day that is not available on the VolunteerSpot calendar, that is because there is no school that day. Skip that day and continue on your every other week schedule. For example, if you volunteer on every other Monday and you come to a day where there is no school, skip that day but DO NOT choose the immediate following Monday. Choose the next Monday you are on AS IF you were on the day there was no school. This will result in you not working for four weeks but that is how it has to be to keep everyone on the correct alternating week.
Please call me with any questions you have regarding the step you need to take to sign yourself up for your Playground Monitor Shift starting January 2010. Thanks again for your commitment to this program. The school and the students really appreciate you.

For the Young at Heart Only… .
Do not continue reading if your children hate to play. If you have been referred to as a “stick in the mud” or couch potato, this is not for you. If your child complains that they spend TOO much time outside and wish they were in the classroom more, then please skip to the next article.
My name is Adriana Graf, and I am this year’s Student Services Committee Chair. One of my duties is to organize our parent volunteers for the after-lunch recess program. If you are a new parent this year, let me explain. For a number of years, Bryker Woods PTA has operated an after-lunch program that allows our children to go outside after they finish lunch for about ten minutes of unstructured playtime before returning to class. This is an additional recess to their regularly scheduled recess time, and is made possible only with support from parent volunteers. To supervise after-lunch recess, we need two volunteer playground monitors, along with a paid AISD employee, for the two hours each day that the classes cycle through the lunchroom, and then outside to play.
Because after-lunch recess is every day of the school year, with two shifts each day that require two volunteers each, it takes about 40 volunteers to operate the program. Without sufficient staffing from our volunteers, the children simply will not get to go out and play after lunch.
We need volunteers for this program! I am hard at work recruiting—look for emails and sign up sheets posted at the front of the school and in Monday folders. This year’s program will be organized through a web-based planning tool called Volunteer Spot for maximum efficiency for everyone.
Each day, the first shift runs from 11:10am to 12:10pm, and the second from 12:10pm to 1:10pm. You can choose one day of the week and volunteer for an hour each week, or every other week, or once a month. Some parents take both shifts back-to-back on a given day. You can sign up with another parent friend to make up (for example) the “Tuesday Team.” We also keep a list of subs to come in when one of volunteers is absent. We’ll work with you to make your playground volunteer schedule fit your circumstances.
I urge you to please consider volunteering your time to keep our children outside for after-lunch playtime. It’s a great opportunity for you to learn about your child’s school environment. Please contact me, and let’s figure out which day of the week works best for you. See you at the playground!
