Dear Parents,
Well, Spring is finally here! I hope you and your loved ones were able to enjoy the long three day weekend together. I know many families were headed out of town to enjoy time with extended families. As our days are beginning to warm up and we are seeing lots of jackets/sweaters that were shed on the playground, they have now ended up in the Lost and Found. We’ll be putting the tables in the front hall with these lost items on them and then off to a charity they will go next Friday the 16th. Please take some time to check with your child for missing items.
This week our 5th graders will be taking the required state exam, TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) in Reading and Math. These tests will be April 6th, 7th, and 8th. Please help your child remember TAKS is but another measure of how our students’ learning is progressing. Eat a good breakfast that morning 5th grade!
Mark your calendar for this Saturday, April 10th from 10 to 12 for a ‘Bryker Woods’ Beautification Day’. Last year we worked planting some new shrubs, trimming old ones, planting flowers and just generally cleaning up. Many families joined in last year as we spiffed up our school grounds. This is just in time as we get ready for the Spring Fling Event which will be April 18th from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
We invite you to an up and coming morning assembly where students and our Spanish Teachers, Pepi Rosado and Kate Gose, will share some of what they have learned this past semester. Miss Gose and some of our K-2 students will present at the Thursday Morning Assembly on April 15th. Mrs. Rosado and some of our 3-6 students will present at the Monday Morning Assembly on April 19th. Please join us at 7:45 AM on these two mornings and see what our students have been learning in Spanish.
And now for some exciting news………..the City of Austin is recognizing Bryker Woods Elementary with the Environmental Awareness Award for our significant work to protect and enhance our environment! Amy Chamberlain submitted our application which stood out among the nine submissions in the "schools" category for our leadership in our community. If you would like to see a copy of our award-winning application, please email amychamberlain@ me.com We've been invited to receive our unique trophy on Earth Day, April 22, at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers during the council's "proclamations. " Congrats to Amy for taking the initiative to apply for this award and all the members of our PTA ‘Green Committee’.
During the month of April we have several of our students who will have their art work displayed at One Congress Plaza as part of the District’s 2010 Art Show, “Wild for Art”. You may view the works of art Monday – Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, or Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Thank you Mrs. Flores for taking these beautiful pieces downtown for our city to share.
