Watch Your Water - Keep Our Oceans Blue!

Nov. 2009 Green Tip: NOW is the time to conserve water for $ savings
Did you know: The cost of providing wastewater services (or sewage treatment) is higher that the cost of providing water services. Wastewater must be extensively treated before it is clean enough to release back into the environment.  You will notice on your utility bill that the cost of wastewater service is much higher than the cost of your water.

What you can do: In Austin, you can lower your wastewater costs for 2010 by conserving your water usage during the winter months.  Since the City has to guess how much water is going down your drains, it chooses the season when you are least likely to be watering outdoors to estimate how much water you use each month.  Depending on your billing cycle, the 3 monthly periods used for wastewater averaging will occur between mid-November and mid-March.  The two months with the lowest usage will be averaged and then used to bill you for NO MORE THAN that usage amount throughout the following year.   My own wastewater bill has fluctuated as much as $90 annually based on how much water we used during the winter.

Oct. 2009 Green Tip: Be Water Wise
Did you know?  Despite recent rains, Central Texas is still in a drought.  The City of Austin has restricted outdoor watering to once a week for homes and businesses.  Water is a shared resource that needs to be conserved, especially at a time like this.  The average Austin household uses 8,500 gallons monthly (more in hotter months and less in cooler months).  In a typical American home, HALF of the water consumed goes to outdoor watering.
                            The other half comes from:
                            toilets - 14%
                            clothes washers - 10.5%
                            showers/baths- 9.5%
                            faucets - 7.5%
                            leaks - 7%

What you can do?  Pay attention to your water usage on your utility bill.  Think of ways to conserve that would make the biggest impact such as:
                            1.  watering outdoors only on your designated day, and only before 10 a.m.:
Saturdays for homes with odd-numbered addresses
Sundays for homes with even-numbered addresses
                            visit www.waterwiseaustin.org  for more details.

                            2. shorten your shower and use less water in the bath.  Make sure your shower has a low-flow showerhead.

                            3. consider if your clothing can be worn again before laundering.

                            4. consider flushing less often in some circumstances.  Be sure your toilet is one that uses no more than 1.6 gallons per flush.  Also, the city has a rebate program to replace pre-1996 toil
